Yellow Chana Dal is a very nutritious food. If you are wondering what dal is, well, in India we call lentils as dal (also sometimes spelt as dahl or dhal ). If you are in a hurry and not too sure what to cook, you may choose to cook yellow chana dal and have it with boiled rice. There are many types of dal, for which I would post the recipes going forward. Today I will write about yellow chana dal, the way I cook it - easy, simple, quick but very nutritious and healthy.

Cookware used :

  1. Gas Oven
  2. Pressure Cooker
  3. Frying pan or kadai

Ingredients :

  1. Chana Dal (1 cup)
  2. Salt (1 teaspoon)
  3. Turmeric powder (¼ teaspoon)
  4. Ginger paste (1½ teaspoon)
  5. Sugar (2 teaspoon)
  6. Jeera - sabut or whole (½ teaspoon)
  7. Tomato (1 medium sized)
  8. Green Chilli (2 piecs)
  9. Oil (2 tablesppon)
  10. Water (3 cups)

Method :

  1. Wash the chana dal and boil it in a pressure cooker with the proportion of salt and turmeric powder. (Tip- Soak the dal for sometime before cooking. That will help the dal to boil quickly and save on cooking gas)
  2. Let a few whistles blow and see that the dal has softend. Number of whistles depend on the quality of dal and the water as well. So there is no thumb rule of how many whistles are appropriate. Couple of days experiment will definitely let you realize the appropriate number of whistles required
  3. Heat oil in a frying pan
  4. Add jeera, tomato slices, ginger paste, green chilli and fry for a minute
  5. Add boiled chana dal and cook for 5-8 minutes
  6. Add sugar and mix well
  7. Serve hot with boiled rice. You can also have with roti or parantha (Indian bread s)

Jeera - sabut means whole cumin seed.

    Jeera means cumin seed
sabut means whole as opposed to grounded
